Hello International Traders!|
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) was the world's 37th largest
importer in 2003, and you'll find plenty of opportunity there for
international trade. If you want to learn more about the UAE,
I've got two great sites in this issue to help you. Do you like
to read the news online? I've got a master site that lists
thousands of online newspapers. Also, I found a site that's a
treasure trove of information about Central and Eastern Europe.
Finally, if you want to find out where you can get free wireless
Internet access, check out the site I profile in this issue.
If you'd like more information about international trade, go to FITA's
International Trade/ Import-Export Portal ( http://fita.org ), an excellent
source for trade leads, news, events, and a link library of 7,000 sites related
to international trade.
| UNITED ARAB EMIRATES -- OUR FEATURED COUNTRY SITE|
Although there is turmoil in some parts of the Middle East, one
bright spot for businesspeople is the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
According to the CIA World Factbook, this Persian Gulf country
has "an open economy with a high per capita income and a sizable
annual trade surplus". Dubai, one of the emirates, has been
called "the leading business center in the Middle East". Because
it has few natural resources other than oil, the UAE depends on
trade -- in 2003 it had more than US $37 billion in imports. If
you'd like to learn more about trade opportunities in the UAE,
here are two sites to visit.
- The British
Chamber of Commerce Export Zone Country Profile of the UAE ( http://www.link2exports.co.uk/countryprofiles/regions.asp?lsid=283 ). At this site you'll find a detailed country profile, plus
reports on the economy, political scene, tourist trade, and other areas of
life in the UAE.
- The Abu Dhabi Chamber
of Commerce ( http://www.abudhabichamber.ae ). Abu Dhabi accounts for
60 percent of the UAE's overall GDP. This site has lots of information about
doing business in the UAE, including a database of companies, online seminars,
trade statistics, an events guide, a tenders listing service, a yellow pages,
and much more.
There are many more links to the UAE at the FITA site. Go to http://fita.org/webindex/index.html,
click on Regional Resources and Multi-Lateral Trading Areas in the left column,
then scroll down to Middle East/Africa and click on United Arab Emirates in
the drop-down box. Or simply type "United Arab Emirates" in the search box at
Another useful resource is the National
US-Arab Chamber of Commerce ( http://www.nusacc.org ). This FITA member
site supports trade in the Middle East, and has research data about the region,
as well as sponsoring conferences and other events. And FITA's "Global
Trade Bookshop" has a great book about doing business in the USA: Culture
Shock!: Success Secrets to Maximize Business in the United Arab Emirates.

WI-FI-FREESPOTS -- GO ONLINE (ALMOST) ANYWHERE
I didn't surf the Internet for this issue's sites while munching on a cheeseburger
in my local burger joint -- but I could have. That's because there are increasing
numbers of restaurants, hotels, and other locations that offer free wireless access,
so you can fire up your laptop computer and surf the Net, check e- mail, download
files -- and anything else you want to do online. To find out if there's a free
wireless connection near you, go to Wi-Fi-
FreeSpots ( http://www.wififreespot.com ). This site has a constantly- updated
listing of places in the U.S. and the world that offer free wireless high speed
Internet access. There are hotels, doughnut shops, restaurants, airports, RV parks
and campgrounds, and hundreds of other venues. The Interesting FAQs page is worth
reading, too, because it gives you useful tips and information about Wi-Fi access.
Scroll to the bottom of the page for the international listing.
